Abstract

The term ‘All Israel’ in Chronicles is characteristically employed in the Chronicler’s decription of the Judean kings. This term does not appear frequently in the parallel texts of Samuel-Kings, but it rather appears more than 40 times in various meanings in Chronicles. The significance of this term in Chronicles is that “All Israel” functions as a covenant concept in Chronicles. The ideal image of ‘All Israel’ in Chronicles was presented through the times of David and Solomon, and the term ‘All Israel’ is frequently repeated in the narratives of the Judean kings after Solomon's reign. It reveals the Chronicler’s theological intentions. The Chronicler applies the concept of ‘All Israel’ to the post-exilic situation in the Persian period, through which the post-exilic community as a covenant people has the continuity with the former Israel. This term reflects the hope of the post-exilic community for the restoration of the whole Israel, in which the twelve tribes of Israel are united.
