Abstract
The purpose of this study was to articulate the essential characteristics and its components of flow experience in dance through describing and analyzing, from the phenomenological perspective, dancer's own experiential description. For doing this, the study focused its main concern into the dance performer's own subjective experience. The 'experiential description and analysis' method was used to collect and analyze 15 research participants' flow experience and to categorize their meaning from the phenomenological perspective. And each categories were compared with the content of 9 components of 'flow-model' proposed by Csikszentmihalyi The following findings were articulated as the result of this study: 1. Based research participants' description of flow experience in doing dance performance, the experiential meanings of flow experience were categorized as follows: 1) disappearance of dichotomy, 2) concentration, 3) perfection, 4) forgotten consciousness, and 5) satisfaction and fullness. Compared with components of flow-model of Csikszentmihalyi, the above categories were related with, in order, 1) unit of behavior and recognition, 2) concentration toward subject, 3) control, 4) lose of self-esteem, 5) intrinsic reward of experience. 2. The relation between flow experience and dance performance would be viewed the following aspect of the process of flow experience in dance: 1) body condition and recognition, 2) level of movement performance, 3) condition of psychological aspect of dancer. In conclusion, it suggested that the understanding of the meaning and value of flow experience in dance would be helpful for the educational context of dance among dancer, choreographer, and dance educator in terms of methodological dimension. In addition, this study assured that the phenomenological approach would be proper methodological framework for researching the dance experience.
