이 연구는 독일 청년이면 누구나 참여할 수 있는 체육클럽, 즉 근대 체육 전환기에 등장한 독일체육 Turnen에 대한 그 의미와 가치를 탐구한 것이다. 이는 Jahn이 창안한 Turnen의 활동내용과 방법을 통한 국민의식에 교육에 대한 고찰이 주요한 논의이다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. Turnen활동 이전 시대는 스포츠활동이 특권 계급사회의 전유물처럼 행사하였다. 그러나 Turnen클럽은 모든 시민, 즉 일반청년들에게 스포츠를 해방시켰다. Jahn은 Turnen활동을 통하여 독일 국가의 구성원인 국민이 주인의식을 가지고 스포츠를 통하여 강한 민족국가를 형성하여야 한다고 교육한 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해 국민평등 의식을 배양시켰다. 또한 국민국가의 국민주의사상, 즉 국민이 주인되는 국민국가사회주의사상을 함양시켰다. 이는 국민주의를 통한 국가수호와 국토방위(전쟁) 등은 국민이 수행하여야 할 의무로 각인시켜 체육스포츠를 통한 국방체육을 강조하였다. 이러한 (근대 국가주의시기에 등장한) Turnen활동의 이념적 파장은 당시 유럽과 뒤이은 독일 제3제국(Drittes Reich)에 영향을 주었다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 당시 유럽의 국가주의 체육활동(스웨덴, 덴마크, 영국 등)과 A. Hitler의 사상(인종주의, 평등주의, 국가 도덕의식, 국민평등, 국방체육 등)이 그것이다.
Abstract
This research aims to study the significance and value of turnen, the initiator of social physical education. turnen was established by Jahn. Jahn is a representative figure who conducted nationalism-based physical activities. He is a typical figure who spearheaded nationalism-based physical education policy and pursued the liberalization and unification of his fatherland. Rather than making an ambiguous choice of neutral value, he pursued values thereby clearly stating his world views and social views, and led the German people through productive, vigorous physical activities. The independence activist Jahn carried out nationalism-based physical activities, thereby making waves across the world including Europe. Likewise, turnen became the initiator of today's social physical education that was created through the combination with nationalism for the benefit of the nation and the people. The foundation motivation, education, value and meaning of turnen, in a word, are to foster healthy youth and firm national awareness and secure the unification of the fatherland and a unified fatherland. For Korea which has been suffering a division into South and North, Jahn's nationalism-based physical activities offer profound significance.
