지역축제의 예술적 속성과 소통의 의미(안동국제탈춤페스티벌을 중심으로)

이 연구는 안동국제탈춤페스티벌을 통해 축제성을 잃은 우리의 삶 속에서 진정한 축제를 되살리고, 나아가 단절되었던 우리 고유의 축제를 회복시키고자 하는 것에 목적이 있다. 따라서 축제의 사례분석에 그치지 않고 축제가 갖는 본질을 재검하면서 근본적인 문제에의 접근과 대안을 위해 축제의 예술적인 속성을 중심으로 연구하였다. 인류의 역사와 함께 해 온 축제가 오늘날까지 전승되어 오는 과정 속에 사라지지 않고 나타나는 원형적인 속성을 니체의 아폴론적, 디오니소스 이론을 바탕으로 분석하였다. 축제의 속성은 ‘소통’으로 축약될 수 있는데 그것은 형식 속에서 은밀히 본능을 드러내는 행위로서 일탈적이고 비일상적이라는 의미에서 탈(脫)문화적인 것이라 할 수 있다. 소통의 지향이 아니라 소통들의 틀과 도구들로부터 벗어날 때 축제적 의미의 소통이 시작된다는 것을 보여주기 위한 것이다. 따라서 지역축제의 본질적인 의미인 ‘소통’은 원시시대 이후 가면축제로서 시작되어 발전하였으며, 현대에 와서 그것은 지역축제 공간의 소통과 하나로 만날 수 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 안동국제탈춤페스티벌은 한국의 고유한 전통춤인 탈춤을 통해 집단을 묶는 중요한 상징으로 공동체의 화합과 풍요 안녕을 기원하는 제의적 축제의 기능을 하며 각 계층과의 소통을 꾀하고 있다. 그 소통구조방식을 형식화하여 예술적으로 승화시킬 수 있었던 정신, 그것은 바로 창조의 정신이며 축제의 근본정신이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to revive a true festival in our non-festive lives through the Andong International Mask Dance Festival and to further restore the cultural productivity innate to Korean culture. This study, therefore, not only analyzed cases of festivals but also reexamined the essence and artistic characteristics of festivals in order to approach, and provide alternatives to, fundamental issues. The original attributes of festivals that have always been present in the history of mankind were analyzed based on Nietzsche’s Apollonian and Dionysiac theories as to how they were maintained through the process of being handed down generation after generation. Festivals can be epitomized as ‘communication’, which can be seen as extra-cultural in that it is a deviating and non-routine act that covertly reveals its instincts within a certain framework. This study aims to show that communication in a festive sense begins not when it intends to communicate but when it breaks away from the frameworks and tools of communication. Therefore, it can be confirmed that communication, the essential significance of regional festivals, began and developed with mask festivals since the primitive age, and only in the modern age was it able to conform to the communication in the space of regional festivals. A significant symbol of community, Andong International Mask Festival plays the ritualistic role of wishing for the cooperation and prosperity of a community through Korean traditional mask dance and seeks to bring about communication between different classes. The spirit which sublimated the festival into an art by configuring communication tools is the essential creative spirit of festivals.
