Abstract
This study is designed to consider on the purpose of physical education by investigating Plato's theory of 'musical education'. According to Plato, the purpose of physical education is to transform of the 'spirit', which is among the three parts of soul, into the virtue of courage. The principle of 'imitation' in the musical education regulates the content of physical education. Musical education corrects the distorted spirit, self-assertion or persistence by the principle of 'imitation'. The principle of imitation makes us approve 'the good' and 'the desirable', instead of excluding them. The aim of physical education is to form the element of 'spirit' into the virtue of 'courage' in terms of the principle of imitation. In the light of the purpose of the physical education, the content of it is not confined to mere physical training only for the victory of games, but extended to comprehend the poetry on morals and religion. Unlike the physical training, physical education is closely related to the idea of 'leisure'. Leisure, as the purpose of physical education, is not a spare time but 'an attitude of mind', or 'a condition of the soul'. It is not the time of recharge for effective working, but 'an attitude of mind', which makes any work or function 'humane'. The content of physical education is to be regulated in terms of the principle of 'imitation' grounded in musical education.
