한국 농구선수 되기: 하프-코리안 선수들의 한국 운동문화에의 갈등과 적응

본 연구의 목적은 하프-코리안 농구선수들의 운동경험에서 나타나는 문화적 갈등이 일어나는 맥락과 적응과정을 심층적으로 분석하는 것이다. 따라서 하프-코리안 농구선수 5명을 대상으로 비참여관찰, 심층면담, 참여노트를 통하여 수집된 자료를 문화기술적 방법으로 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 하프-코리안 농구선수들은 외국에서의 삶에서 겪었던 운동경험과 새로운 환경인 한국에서의 운동경험을 비교하며, 이해과정을 구축한다. 그들에게 운동의 시작은 순수한 자기목적적 행위로서 주변의 지지를 얻을 수 있었으며, 학업에서는 한국선수들과는 대조적으로 학업과 운동의 병행을 통한 균형 있는 삶을 추구하고 있었다. 하프-코리안 농구선수들의 시각에서 한국의 과도한 운동량은 운동하는 기계로 표현할 만큼 육체적 피로와 고통을 느끼고 있었으며, 개인플레이 위주에서 팀플레이로의 전환에 대한 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 또한 극기훈련과 같은 체력훈련과 긴 훈련시간, 잔소리가 많은 감독들의 코칭 스타일은 이해하기 힘든 부정적 요소이다. 한편 경기출전을 위해 어느 정도 감독과의 친분관계를 유지해야 하는 상황과 지나친 감독들의 통제는 흥미, 열정, 재미, 의욕을 감소시키고 대인관계에서는 가부장제, 유교사상에서 기인한 엄격한 선·후배관계에 대한 절대성에 대해 인식하고 받아들이는 현실적인 입장을 취했지만 과한 요구에 있어서는 반감을 가지고 있었다. 또한 사생활이 제한되는 합숙생활을 이해하는 것에 어려움을 겪기도 하였으나 시간이 지남에 따라 동료와의 관계에 있어서도 도움을 얻고 배우는 등 적응과정을 통하여 그 안에서의 즐거움과 재미를 찾아가고 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of the cultural conflicts and adaption among half-Korean Professional Basketball Players. The depth interview, participation observation and experiential description method were used to collect 5 research participants' athletic and cultural experience. Phenomenological method was used to interpretate collected data and the followings are determined as an experimental result. First, There was a process of introduction and involvement, during which they received family support as they start to play basket ball. Second, They suffered from taking excessive exercise and stress out by coaching styles of their coach by continual nagging. Third, Staying well connected to coach for being a regular member was not only hard to understand but made them exhausted. Fourth, They indicated their standpoint which recognized the relationship between older and younger players caused by confucian idea but antagonized inappropriate manner. Fifth, Half-Korean players had difficulties on understanding Korean professional players’ training camp life that normally has many restrictions on privacy; however, as time goes by, half-Korean players have learned unique relationships among the associates through the adjustment and also successfully seeking out pleasure and interest on the training camp life. Consequently, Athletic experience of half-korean basketball players reflects the unique Korean athletic culture and problems.
