이 논문의 목적은 객관-주관의 개념에 대한 철학적 접근법이 스포츠에 적용됐을 때 갖는 도덕적 함의를 분석하는 데 있다. 논의를 위한 바탕으로, 우선 Nagel이 “The Possibility of Altruism(1970),”“Moral Questions(1979),”“The View from Nowhere(1986)”에서 제시한 내부-외부와 주관-객관의 구분을 요약하였다. 객관-주관 논의에 대한 구조를 밝힌 후, Bernard Suits의 스포츠의 정의에 대한 분석을 토대로 스포츠에 있어서 주관-객관의 개념이 야기하는 문제가 무엇인지를 제시하였다. 또한 스포츠의 주관-객관의 구분을 시도한 Randolph Feezell(2001)과 William Morgan(2003)의 주요 주장들을 고찰함으로써 어떤 의미에서 주관과 객관의 개념이 스포츠에서 유비될 수 있는가를 설명하였다. 마지막으로, 사람들의 스포츠에 대한 애착(주관)과 이러한 애착에 대한 보다 거리를 두는 견해(객관) 사이의 대립이 타협될 수 있는지를 살펴본 후, 이 근본적 역설을 다루기 위해 요구되는 스포츠를 향한 바람직한 태도들을 제안하였다. 이러한 태도들은 스포츠 참여에 있어 중요한 도덕적 함의를 포함하고 있음을 주장하였다.
Abstract
This essay aims to analyze the moral implication of the philosophical approach to the concept of the subjective/objective when it is applied to sport. First, I will review the division of the internal/external, and subjective/objective as presented by Nagel in "The Possibility of Altruism"(1970), “Moral Questions”(1979), and "The View from Nowhere" (1986). Then, the problems arising from the concept of subjective/objective will be discussed, drawing on Bernard Suits' analysis of the definition of sport. In addition, by examining Randolph Feezell's and William Morgan's arguments on the distinction between subjective and objective, my essay attempts to explain the way the concept of subjective and objective can be used in sport settings. Finally, I will explain how the conflict between the (subjective) attachment to sport and the (objective) distancing from sport comes into being, so as to suggest desirable attitudes toward sport in thinking this essential paradox. My argument is that these attitudes include important moral implications regarding sport participation.
