Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the meaning and main category of contact improvisation. For this purpose, the study concentrates on the effects of contact improvisation dance. In 1972, contact improvisation dance was developed by Steve Paxton, a modern dancer of the United States. Contact improvisation was certainly a new type of dance consisting of two important elements, contact and improvisation. Contact improvisation, as inspired by the famous modern dancer Isadora Duncan, emphasizes freedom and natural spirit in dance. Contact improvisation dance is distinguished from the ordinary traditional modern dance in that the former is characterized by the concept of 'nature', 'freedom' and 'beyond the mainstream art'. Contact improvisation is a process-oriented movement which harmonizes with the flow of nature. It provides freedom of improvisation along with the intimacy of contact. Through movement, the contact improvisation dancer strengthens self-awareness and expands self-existence. The dancer also experiences the meditative consciousness of the present condition. Conclusively, contrary to modern society where the law ‘survival of the fittest’ prevails, contact improvisation dance will play an important role in helping people live authentic lives filled with trust, cooperation and creativity.
