스포츠윤리(sport ethics)란 가능한가? 우리는 이 용어를 단순한 일상적 사용을 넘어서 철학적으로 적절하게 사용할 수 있는가? 이것은 의료윤리(medical ethics), 공학윤리(engineering ethics), 사업윤리(business ethics)들과 같은 직업윤리(professional ethics)로 간주될 수 있는가, 아니면 환경윤리(environmental ethics)와 같은 실천윤리(practical ethics)인가? 어떻게든 소위 스포츠윤리가 이런 응용윤리(applied ethics)의 한 형태로 간주 될 수 있다면 어떤 규범윤리(normative ethics)적 이론이 이 영역을 정당화할 수 있는가? 어떤 형이상학적 기초(metaphysical foundation)와 합리적 절차를 통해서 이 영역을 규정할 수 있으며, 어떤 문제들이 신중하게 논의되어져야하는가? 이 논문에서 필자는 스포츠윤리라는 용어를 철학적으로 엄밀하게 근거지우려고 할 때 자연스럽게 생기게 되는 장애물들과 이것을 극복하려고 할 때 마주치게 되는 선택지들을 신중하게 검토한다. 먼저 정신인과의 문제(the problem of mental causation)는 스포츠윤리의 규정을 위해서 필수적인 요소이며, 스포츠행동에 윤리성을 귀속시키려고 할 때 우리는 의무론보다 결과주의적인 접근방법이 스포츠윤리에 더 적절한 요소를 가지고 있다는 것을 주장하겠다. 물론 필자의 기호는 규칙공리주의보다 행위공리주의이다. 또한 필자의 마음을 떠나지 않는 한 논점이 있는데 그것은 과연 일반적 행동과 스포츠 선수들의 스포츠행동사이에 보이는 직관적인 차이가 과연 무엇인가 하는 것이다. 일반적 행동들을 윤리적으로 규정하는 규범윤리 이론들이 스포츠행동들에게도 적용될 수 있는가하는 메타윤리적(meta-ethical) 의문에 명확한 해답은 아직까지 제시되지 않은 듯하다. 규범윤리의 근본적 주장들이 응용윤리의 여러 분야들에도 적용될 수 있도록 보편화 될 수 있는가? 이 질문에 대한 해답은 이 논문의 범위를 훌쩍 넘어선다.
