Abstract

Over the past decades there has been a change in the recognition of soma that is unilaterally built at a series of educational and cultural levels in relation to criticism of educational estrangement and insensibility to soma. Soma, meaning my own somatic premised on an experience aspect of the human body, is a concept of internally recognized body and a somatic experience in the condition in which there is harmony between a human being and the environment. Since soma is based on the discovery of a human being through exploration and development related to internal experience in physical motions, non-linguistic forms, and the procedures and methods, it is limitlessly possible to concretize it in a domain of physical training. It includes somatic recognition, meditation, energy recognition, mental exercise theory, akido, respiratory technique, acupuncture, biorhythm, all kinds of military arts, and so forth. Among others, yoga is soma’s representative method for mental and physical training. And as a means of fulfilling the purpose and value of physical training, it is a very ideal educational program that can mirror the ideas and values of somatics. Since Yoga classifies the mind as substance like the body, it sees the mind and body as not separated but unified. In this respect, yoga is the same way as somatics that leads the practitioner to understanding by means of physical practice. A recognition of soma through yoga practice activates all functions of the body and nervous systems by making us pay attention to a subtle difference in our internal structure. This is a core of yoga to understand soma that somatics means. In conclusion, this study intends to cast light on somatic yoga on the basis of the theories and practices of somatic education as a new horizon of physical training in pursuit of physical education. This can be used not only for searching for the diversity of physical education curricula but also as a basic material for planning a program for yoga practices, and the education and popularization of yoga.
