Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide a philosophical foundation of TKD as martial arts, which emphasizes not only a training of body but also the cultivation of mind and body, by an analysis of body-mind training based on the concept of "Qi." As it is well-known, there are two aspects in the training of Taekwondo. On the one hand, Taekwondo is simply understood as a combative sport that focuses on the acquisition of a certain skills and the training of a physical body. And on the other hand, Taekwondo is conceived of as a martial art that concentrates on the cultivation of mind as well as the training of body. However in the mind-body training in TKD, the concept of mind is not thought as an immaterial substance opposed to a physical body in the case of academic philosophy. That is, the training of mind-body does not presuppose a rigid dualism. In contrast to the dualistic understanding of mind and body, in the mind-body training in TKD the concept of mind is not regarded as an independent substance from a physical body. Rather, mind is intrinsically related to a body. Hence from the ontological view, the mind-body training of TKD is grounded on monism. And the mind-body training of TKD is essentially bound up with monism because it is ultimately founded in "qi" that primordially supports mind as well as body.
