본 논문의 주목적은 태권도의 현대적 정체성을 밝히는 데에 있다. 태권도의 현대적 의미와 수련 철학을 정립하기 위한 시도로서, 현대 사회에서의 태권도 수련이 안고 있는 사상적 문제점을 파악하고, 이러한 문제점들을 해결할 수 있는 새로운 수련 개념 혹은 철학을 모색하고자 한다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위하여 동양 무도의 발전 과정, 특히 무도 사상의 성립과 변천 과정을 파악하고, 그 과정에서 나타나는 무도 이념과 실천과의 갈등과 모순을 살펴보았다. 이 분석을 토대로 하여 오늘날 태권도 수련과 관련하여 전통적 개념과 현대적 인식의 불일치 및 전통적 수련 방범과 경기 위주의 수련 방식의 대립으로 인한 철학적 혼란을 알아보고, 이러한 불일치와 대립이 태권도의 정체성 확립에 미치는 영향을 논하겠다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여 다음과 같은 태권도의 수련 목적, 방법, 그리고 가치라는 삼각관계의 상호작용을 정리하고자 한다. 본 논문의 세부 연구 문제들이 다음과 같다. (1) 무도 사상의 성립 과정과 그 내용은 무엇인가? (2) 역사 발전 과정에서 나타난 주요 무도 개념의 변화는 어떻게 이루어졌는가? (3) 무도의 수련관은 근대화 과정을 통해서 어떻게 변화되었는가? (4) 현대 태권도에서 발견되는 수련관과 수련 방법론에 대한 대립과 갈등을 해소할 수 있는 방법은 무엇인가? 이상의 연구 문제들을 중심으로 이루어진, 본 논문의 내용은 첫째, 동양 무도의 성립 둘째, 동양 무도 개념의 변화 셋째, 수련관과 수련 가치의 변화 그리고 넷째, 현대적 의미의 태권도 수련관으로 요약할 수 있다.
