Abstract
This paper focuses on the Ancient Greek dance. Moreover, the aesthetic point of view is to take a look at. Especially, dance as a language of gestures for the dance through the aesthetic concepts(choreia, poiesis, mousikē, gymnastikē etc.) is to establish the boundaries of aesthetics. According to aesthetics historian W. Tatarkiewicz, the dance originated in ancient Greece to the ‘triune choreia’. It was accompanied by words and musical sounds. The dance, combined with music and poetry into whole, and this art expressed man’s feelings and impulses though words and gestures, melody and rhythm the term choreia underlines the crucial role of the dance. It is derived from choros, a chorus, which originally signified a group dance. Greek vocabulary may lead us astray, because the same terms were used then as now, but they meant something different to Greeks centuries ago. For example, ‘poiesis’(deriving from poiein: to make) originally signified any type of production. This concept has the opposite meaning against that governed by the rules excellence of skill, i.e., ‘technē’. And ‘mousikē’(derived from Muses) signified every activity patronized by the Muses and not just the art of sound. In ancient Greeks, muse was coming from the dance. Therefore, dance as mousikē was the muse owns. That's ‘Terpsichorē’, ‘delight in dancing’ was one of the nine Muses, ruling over dance and the dramatic chorus. Her name comes from the Greek words τέρπω(delight) and χoρός(dance). She is usually depicted sitting down, holding a lyre, accompanying the dancers' choirs with her music. In the case of Platon, the dance is mentioned in connection with the education. He referred to the education of the soul(psychē) by the art education(mousikē) and the body(soma) by physical education(gymnastikē) of the dance is mentioned. As a result, dance of ancient Greece to seek the individual's aesthetic pleasure beyond religious rituals and necessary for the good of the polis has shown that. Furthermore dance is an art(mousikē), and physical fitness(gymnastikē) was part of the two areas was much more important in ancient Greece.
