Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how sword dance exhibits rituality in Korea, India, and Japan. Sword dance is a kind of dance using a sword as its tool, and the origin of it can be found from rituals, weapons, or wars in primitive trial society. The subjects of this study are Jinju Sword Dance in Korea, Chhaliya Dance in India, and Onigenmai in Japan, and they are all prayers performed to nature or god in ordinary time and space. And they are expressions of gratitude about peace and happiness in life. According to the results of examining rituality commonly found in those sword dances, first, they enhanced rituality by habituating collective behavior that was ritual as well as voluntary. Second, with the dual structure of time and space, they made the border between usual and worldly time and space and divine time and space. Lastly, as they were strongly characterized by the festive features of community rites with their rituals, there coexisted joyfulness and delightfulness in them at the same time. In other words, sword dance in Korea, India, and Japan is regarded as customary and symbolic behavior performed in divine time and space and well contains the principles of festivals by transmitting the legacy of their community rituals. Those ritual characteristics of sword dance are the essential features of it which penetrate the tradition of sword dance in Korea, India, and Japan and have formed the crucial factors that have allowed the dance to be transmitted up until today.
