Abstract

This study aims to systematize the dance forms of Geommu by comparing and examining the Sword movements of Jinju Geommu and Honam Geommu. The research method was an analyzation using literature research and video and photographic data. The research results are as follows. First, while Honam Geommu involves a constant turning of the blade, while in Jinju Geommu the neck of the blade is not turned. Instead, the blade is turned using the strength of the wrist, arm, and fingers. Second, Honam Geommu involves a variety of sword techniques, while Jinju Geommu contains a multitude of repetitive movements. Third, the Honam Geommu holds a rural nature, shown in its usage of the characteristic dance movement, Uma Balsawi. Meanwhile the Jinju Geommu is characterized by aggressive and offensive sword actions such as stabbing and thrusting. Fourth, while the Honam Geommu is fast and lively, Jinju Geommu highlights its serious and aggressive movements. Fifth, While Honam Geommu stands out for its flexibility and technique in using the sword, Jinju Geommu is demonstrated by its decisiveness, technique and spirit. These movements symbolize bravery, discipline, and the image of soldiers charging. Following the results of this study, follow-up research will be needed to be conducted to help establish an aesthetic system for the local traditional dance.
