Abstract

This study explores the aesthetic significance of the moving body based on the concept of "mun (文)" in the I Ching (周易). In the past, Eastern philosophy used the Eight Trigrams (八卦) to observe the patterns (文) drawn by the cosmos and nature, and examining changes in celestial and human affairs to find guidelines for life. Celestial patterns refer to the order of the heaven’s movements, which humans should observe and adapt to. Human patterns refer to the order of civilized life, which humans can examine to harmonize the world. Thus, this study investigates beauty through the application of human virtues, specifically the expression of benevolence (仁德), based on the principles of the Qian hexagram (乾卦) of Yuan-Heng-Li-Zhen (元亨利貞), to new forms of body adornment. Applying this understanding in practice allows us to perceive the universe as a living entity. The I Ching emphasizes that true art, which benefits life, lies in vitality and altruism. Integrating the artistic significance of the I Ching into the moving body is an effort to reveal one's hidden nature and foster a broader understanding of humanity. Consequently, new forms of body adornment can be understood as a means of reinvigorating the meaning of life through physical activity. As a result, this study advocates that physical education and sport activities should be seen as objects of artistic perception, helping to find the meaning of life and existence.
