Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to explore the mediating role of the Yin-Yang theory within the Eight Trigrams in bridging physical and mental movement, and to develop a movement program grounded in its symbolic meanings. Methods: Through a literature-based analysis of the I Ching’s Yin-Yang philosophy and the symbolic system of the Eight Trigrams, the study constructed mantra-like thematic sentences that reflect each trigram’s essence. These were then integrated into a movement methodology, termed "Motion Poong (Motion風)," incorporating the cyclical nature of the four seasons and cardinal directions. Result: The symbolic attributes of the trigrams were embodied through the integration of mantra and movement. Repetitive practice demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing emotional stability, self-suggestion, and self-regulation among practitioners. Conclusion: The Yin-Yang theory of the Eight Trigrams offers a meaningful pedagogical model that integrates philosophical insight with somatic practice in contemporary dance education. Furthermore, the approach holds potential for expansion into therapeutic applications across age groups, cultures, and interdisciplinary fields such as somatics, psychology, and mind-body medicine.
