Abstract
This study defines the concept of trail running referees and explore their future direction. While trail running is rapidly gaining popularity, its qualitative growth has not kept pace with its quantitative growth. A qualitative analysis revealed deficiencies in two of the three essential elements of a sport: rules and refereeing. Specifically, it examined the challenges faced by trail running referees. Those challenges can be broadly categorized into three areas: first, the necessity and expertise of referees during competition preparation; second, consistency issues in pre-race verification procedures; and third, responsibility and authority issues regarding disqualifications during the competition. To address these issues, this study proposed two approaches. First, similar to marathon it is necessary to introduce certified course measurers, similar to those used in marathon races, to ensure safety and reliability. Second, training specialized officials who possess expertise and can be entrusted with authority and responsibility throughout the event management process is essential. Finally, the study I proposes defining the role of trail running referees as officials, a more comprehensive term that distinguishes them from concepts such as umpire, referee, judge, and steward, as they are responsible for both technology-based monitoring and the ability to foster self-discipline in participants.
