본 연구에서는 대학생을 대상으로 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 경험회피, 사회불안 간의 관계를 살펴보고, 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족이 경험회피를 매개로 사회불안에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 4년제 대학교 남학생 168명, 여학생 114명, 총 282명의 대학생들을 대상으로 자기보고식 설문지를 통해 자료를 수집하였고, 상관분석과 중다회귀분석을 통해 결과를 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족, 경험회피, 사회불안 간의 상관관계가 모두 유의미하였다. 둘째, 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 경험 회피가 사회불안에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 두 변인 모두 사회불안에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족과 사회불안의 관계에서 경험회피의 부분 매개효과가 확인되었다. 이와 같은 결과는 모호한 상황을 견디지 못하는 인지적 편향과 정서를 회피하거나 억제하려는 행동특성이 사회불안에 모두 영향을 미치며, 불확실성을 견디지 못하는 사람들이 정서적, 행동적 억제 및 회피를 통해 사회불안을 더욱 심화시킨다는 것을 의미한다. 사회불안을 감소시키기 위해서는 인지적 요인과 함께 정서, 행동 경험에 대한 수용적 개입을 고려할 필요가 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of intolerance of uncertainty and experiential avoidance on social anxiety, and the mediating effect of experiential avoidance on social anxiety. Subjects were 282 college students (164 males and 114 females). Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to test the effect on variables. The results are as follows: first, intolerance of uncertainty is positively correlated to experiential avoidance, and social anxiety. Second, social anxiety is influenced by intolerance of uncertainty and experiential avoidance. Third, the mediating effect is validated in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and social anxiety. This study suggests that both cognitive bias, which refers to not being able to tolerate ambiguous situations, and the behavioral characteristics that predispose people to avoid or inhibit emotion have an impact on social anxiety. In addition, the findings indicate that the social anxiety of people who cannot tolerate uncertainty intensified owing to experiential avoidance. These results suggest that cognitive and emotional factors, as well as behavioral characteristics should be considered while planning therapeutic interventions for people with social anxiety.
