피터 싱어의 효율적 이타주의, 그리고 나눔

『동물해방』의 저자로 유명한 피터 싱어(Peter Singer)는 최근 사람들에게 효율적 이타주의자(effective altruist)로 살아갈 것을 권한다. 그에 따르면 효율적 이타주의란 “세상을 개선하는 가장 효율적인 방법을 이성과 실증을 통해 모색하고 실천하는 철학이자 사회운동”이다. 이러한 이타주의는 사실상 공리주의의 특징을 의식하고서 이타성을 발휘하면서 살아가라는 요구에 다름 아니다. 이는 최대한 행복을 도모하고 고통을 줄이는 방법이 무엇인지를 의식하면서, 동기보다 결과를 중요시하며 모두의 이익을 동등하게 고려하며 살아가라는 요청인 것이다. 우리는 이러한 기준을 삶의 다양한 영역에 적용해 볼 수 있는데, 특히 봉사 활동에서는 이러한 기준을 의식해야 명실상부한 활동이 어느 정도 이루어질 수 있다. 가령 우리가 효율적 이타주의를 의식하고 나눔을 실천하고자 한다면 ①누가 나눌 것인지, ②무엇을 나눌 것인지, ③대상이 누구인지, ④어떻게 나눌 것인지 등을 종합적으로 고려해야 할 것이다. 이와 같은 문제를 충분히 의식하지 않고 나눔을 실천할 경우 효율적으로 이타주의를 실천할 수 없음은 말할 것도 없고, 심지어 누군가에게 피해를 주는 민폐 활동을 하게 될 수 있을 것이다. 글은 평범한 사람들, 다시 말해 시간적인 여유가 없고, 나눔 활동에 헌신할 생각이 별로 없음에도 나눔 활동을 해야 한다고 생각하거나 불가피하게 해야 하는 사람들의 경우 기부가 가장 무난한 활동이라고 주장하고 있다. 싱어는 최대한 효율적으로 이타성을 실천할 것을 요구하고, 원칙적으로 한계 효용 지점(marginal utility point)에 이를 때까지 이타성을 발휘할 것을 권한다. 하지만 이럭저럭 따를 수 있는 첫 번째 기준과는 달리, 두 번째의 요청은 평범한 사람들이 따르기에는 너무 높은 수준이다. 특히 사람들이 정신적·물질적 여유 없이, 늘 경쟁 속에서 살아가고 있는 국내의 상황 속에서 이러한 기준은 자칫 그 누구도 귀 기울이지 않는 공허한 메아리가 될 수 있다. 이 글은 싱어가 요구하는 효율적 이타주의의 기준을 다소 낮게 조정하면서도 어느 정도 효율적 이타주의자로 살아갈 수 있는 방법을 한 가지 제안하고 있는데, 그 방법은 기부를 하되 나 몰래 혼자서 하지 말고, 주변 사람들을 적극적으로 끌어들여서 함께 기부를 하라는 것이다. 비록 이러한 방법이 필요충분한 효율적인 이타주의자로 살아가는 방법으로는 부족함이 있지만 그럼에도 이는 최소한의 효율적 이타주의자로 살아가는 방법이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Peter Singer, the author of 『Animal Liberation』, recommends that people live as effective altruists. According to him, efficient altruism is a "philosophy and social movement that seeks and practices the most efficient way to improve the world through reason and proof." This altruism is virtually no different from the demand to live altruistically while keeping in mind the characteristics of utilitarianism. This is a request to be aware of how to promote happiness and reduce pain as much as possible, and to value results over motivation and consider everyone's interests equally. We can apply these standards to various areas of life, especially in volunteer activities, only when we are aware of these standards can we do some activities in name and reality. For example, if we are conscious of efficient altruism and want to practice sharing, we should comprehensively consider who will share, what will be shared, who will be the target, and how to share. If sharing is practiced without sufficient awareness of such subjects, it will not be possible to practice altruism efficiently, but it will even lead to nuisance activities that harm someone. The article argues that donation is the easiest activity for ordinary people, in other words, those who think they should do sharing activities even though they do not have much time to spare and do not intend to devote themselves to sharing activities. Singer demands that altruism be practiced as efficiently as possible, and in principle, it is recommended that altruism be exercised until the marginal utility point is reached. But contrary to the first criteria that can be managed to follow, the second request is too high for ordinary people to follow. In particular, in the domestic situation where people are always living in competition without mental and material leisure, these standards can be an empty echo that no one listens to. This article proposes a way to live as an efficient altruist to some extent while adjusting the standards of efficient altruism as required by Singer to be somewhat low, and to donate together by actively attracting people around them. Although this method is not enough to live as an efficient altruist, it could nevertheless be a way to live as a minimum efficient altruist.
