본 연구는 삶의 바탕 위에서 도덕적인 탐구 활동이 실천과 어떠한 관계를 맺으며 한 인간의 인격을 형성하는지를 검토하고자 한다. 이를 위한 하나의 사례이자 준거로 삼는 텍스트는 아우구스티누스(Augustinus)의 『고백록』(Confessiones)이다. 『고백록』에 담겨 있는 아우구스티누스의 회심을 인격의 성숙이자 높은 도덕 수준의 도달이라고 본다면, 회심에 이르기까지 아우구스티누스의 삶은 도덕성을 발전적으로 내면화하는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 연구자는 아우구스티누스의 삶과 지적 여정을 일별하고, 그 안의 핵심 문제가 무엇이었는지 드러낸 후, 그것이 기독교에 귀의하게 되면서 어떻게 해소되었는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 고찰을 도덕교육의 관점에서 볼 수 있도록 뒷받침하는 근거는 아우구스티누스가 살던 시대에서 철학을 이해하는 방식인 ‘삶의 방식으로서의 철학’ 개념이다. 삶의 지평에서 도덕교육을 이해한다면, 도덕교육은 규범적 지식의 습득과 이에 대응하는 실천이라는 ‘좁은 관점’을 넘어, 삶을 바탕으로 하여 이론과 실천의 구별 없이 모종의 목적과 가치를 탐구하는 ‘넓은 관점’으로 나아갈 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationships between ethical inquiries rooted in the forms of life and their practical implications in shaping human character. As a case study and reference for this purpose, we turn to Augustine's "Confessions." If we consider Augustine's conversions as a maturation of his personality and the attainment of a high level of morality, the conversions can be seen as a process of internalizing morality. This paper explains Augustine's life and intellectual journey, reveals its core issues, and explore how they were resolved as he turned to Christianity. This analysis for moral education is supported by the idea of "philosophy as a way of life," a way of understanding philosophy prevalent in Augustine's era. By understanding moral education from the horizon of life, it allows us to move beyond the "narrow sense" of morality as acquiring normative knowledge and corresponding practice, into a "broad sense" seamlessly integrates theoretical and practical aspects in the exploration of diverse purposes and values in life.
