이 논문의 목적은 아우구스티누스의『고백록』에서 보이는 교육적 경험의 서술방식과 내용을 분석하여 교육적 활동으 로서 고백이 지니는 특징을 규명하는 것이다. 연구자는『고백록』을 구성하고 있는 고백적 진술이 하나의 서술방식에 그치는 것이 아니라 아우구스티누스가 자신의 교육적 경험을 체계화하고 명료화하는 데 주요한 역할을 한다고 주장한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구가 일차적으로 검토하는 것은 아우구스티누스가 제시하는 학습으로서의 교육적 경험이다.『고백록』 에서 아우구스티누스는 언어 습득을 학습의 원형으로 제시하며 이를 통하여 학습이 내면에서 촉발된 활동이자 내면을 탐구하는 활동임을 보여준다. 이러한 의미의 학습을 가장 잘 보여주는 것이『고백록』텍스트 자체이다. 구체적으로 말하면, 첫째,『고백록』의 형식은 고백적 활동을 통하여 내면의 존재를 조명한다. 둘째, 고백적 활동은 고백의 내용이 되는 경험을 성찰, 재구성하여 발전된 이해에 이르게 한다. 셋째,『고백록』이 초점으로 삼는 내면성은 고백적 활동이 최종적으로 지향하는 내면적 자아를 드러낸다. 이 셋은 각각 고백적 활동의 일환으로서 내면의 조명, 내면의 이해, 내면성의 추구라는 발전된 단계를 구성한다. 고백적 활동은 그 자체로 내면을 조명하고 발전시킨다는 점에서 하나의 교육적 활동이라고 할수 있으며, 고백을 통하여 얻는 교육적 경험은 내면적 자아에 대한 존재론적 이해의 중요성을 드러낸다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze Augustine’s description and content of educational experiences in his Confessions to identify the characteristics of the confessional activity as an educational activity. Augustine’s confessional statements not only serve as a narrative technique, but they also play a crucial role in systematizing and clarifying his educational experience. In Confessions, Augustine presents language acquisition as an archetype of learning, demonstrating that learning is an activity triggered by the mind. The text Confessions best exemplifies this meaning of learning; in particular, its form reminds us of inner existence through confessional activities. In addition, confessional activities reflect upon and reconstruct the experiences that become the contents of Confessions, leading to an advanced understanding. Finally, focusing on the inner in Confessions reveals the inner self that Augustine’s confessional activities ultimately seek. These three stages—illuminating, further understanding, and pursuing the inner self—construct the developed phases of confessional activities. Such activities can be seen as educational in themselves, illuminating and advancing the inner self, and the educational experience gained through confessions reveals the importance of an ontological understanding of the inner self.
