Abstract
This thesis aims to present the conditions for a discourse in which discussion on biblical authority can take place dynamically. For the past century, the old Princeton School’s biblical discourse, the standard of conservative evangelical theology, was a response to Descartes’ epistemological foundationalism, which demanded epistemological certainty for truth. In particular, Benjamin Warfield tried to secure ‘the epistemological status of the Bible as the ultimate truth’ and to establish the external and objective authority of the Bible through biblical discourse centered on the notion of the plenary verbal inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture. The old Princeton’s biblical discourse was an inevitable response to modernism and thus deserves recognition for its theological contributions in defending Scripture’s authority amid an epistemological crisis. Nevertheless, the biblical discourse based on epistemological foundationalism has structural limitations such as ‘epistemological reductionism’, ‘dichotomy between objectivism and subjectivism’, and ‘separation from other Christian doctrines’. These limitations resulted in the Galapagos-like isolation of biblical discourse from the entire ecosystem of Christian theology. The discourse of biblical authority in our time, facing a transitional situation from modern to postmodern, requires a new form. The new format should take into account the following three factors integrally: (1) the text of the Bible as an epistemological foundation of truth (Text), (2) the divine author who speaks through the Bible (Speaker), and (3) an interpretative community that listens to and faithfully responds to God’s Word (Hearer). Two conditions must be met in order for the triadic discourse of Scripture’s authority to secure space for ‘the work of the Holy Spirit in the authority and interpretation of Scripture’ and ‘the call to interpretation and practice toward the faith community’. First, in the whole system of systematic theology, biblical discourse needs to be relocated to a mutual center out of an isolated introductory position. When biblical discourse is integrated into the structure of a comprehensive Christian doctrine, various themes of biblical discourse, that is, ontology and function, authority and interpretation, meaning and practice can be organically discussed. Second, the new form of discourse on biblical authority must restore the relationship between epistemology and hermeneutics, which are mutually exclusively divided by modern epistemological foundationalism. The hermeneutics to be considered here should not be to rationalize one’s own words by elevating human beings as an interpretive subject, but rather to be ‘hermeneutics of the Word’ to properly hear the voice of God speaking through Scripture. In a new discourse, trust in the epistemological position of Scripture as truth would be restored, the economy of the triune God’s salvation spoken in Scripture would be revealed abundantly, and the importance of ‘the hermeneutics of the Word’ for the formation of the identity of the interpretive community and the Christian life would be highlighted. On the force field thus formed, Christians reading the Bible can experience divine discourse and practice that shakes and transforms themselves.
