기독교 창조론과 생태계 위기: 린 화이트의 주장에 대한 세 가지 반론

우리 시대의 생태적 위기의 원인이 중세 기독교 신학이라는 린 화이트의 주장은 진위를 떠나 많은 논란과 충격을 불러일으켰다. 일단 생태위기극복을 위해 모두가 힘을 모아야 하는 상황에서 우리의 책무를 돌아보는것은 의미가 있다. 다만 생태적 위기의 원인이 중세 기독교 신학에 있다는화이트의 주장에 대해서는 좀 더 면밀한 검토가 필요하다. 이 논문에서 우리는 세 가지 방법으로 검토하고 화이트의 주장이 다소 과장되었다고 결론을 내린다. 첫째는 구약신학에서의 반론인데, 창 1-2장의 주석학적 결론은 기독교 창조론이 자연에 대한 훼손을 명령하지 않는다는 것이다. 두번째는 과학사와 관련된 반론인데, 기독교 신학이 현대 자연과학의 출현에 어떻게 기여했는지와 관련이 있다. 사실 기독교 서구에서 자연과학이 등장했지만, 자연과학의 출현이라는 거대한 인류학적 사건에서 기독교 창조의 교리가 전적으로 그 공로를 차지할 수는 없다. 서양에서 자연과학의출현은 우리가 생각하는 것보다 더 복잡하기 때문에 한 눈에 정리되지 않는다. 셋째, 기독교 창조론이 생태적 위기를 조성한 것이 아니라 서구에서기독교 창조 교리가 사라지면서 오늘의 생태적 위기가 발생했다는 반론이다. 이것은 최근에 판넨베르크에 의해 제기되었다. 이상의 세 가지 논의들은 화이트의 주장이 무모함을 확인시켜 준다.
Abstract
Lynn White’s claim that the cause of the ecological crisis of our time was medieval Christian theology caused a lot of controversy and shock, regardless of authenticity. For now, it is meaningful to look back on our responsibilities at a time when everyone has to work together to overcome the ecological crisis. However, a more careful review of White’s claim that the cause of the ecological crisis lies in medieval Christian theology is needed. In this paper, we review in three ways and conclude that White’s argument is somewhat exaggerated. The first is a counterargument in Old Testament theology, and the exegetical conclusion of Chapter 1-2 is that Christian doctrine of creation does not order damage to nature. The second is a counterargument related to the history of science, which is related to how Christian theology contributed to the emergence of modern natural sciences. In fact, natural sciences emerged in the Christian West, but Christian doctrine of creation cannot exclusively take over the credit in the enormous anthropological event called the emergence of natural sciences. The emergence of natural sciences in the West is more complex than we think, so it is not organized at a glance. Third, the counterargument is that Christian doctrine of creation did not create an ecological crisis, but the disappearance of Christian doctrine of creation in the West caused today’s ecological crisis. This was recently proposed by Pannenberg. The above mentioned three discussions confirm the recklessness of White’s thesis.
