한국 근대사에서 1919년 4월15일 발생한 ‘제암리교회 학살사건’(堤岩里敎會 虐殺事件)은 일제에 항거한 한국인들의 자주독립 만세운동사에서 가장 비극적인 사건이라고 할 것이다. 제암리교회 학살사건은 세계사적 흐름에서 19세기 서구의 근대화에 기반 한 제국주의 열강들이 각축하던 시대에 일제의 조선 침탈이라는 맥락에서 그 의미를 이해할 수 있다. 일제에 의해 주권을 상실한 조선의 백성들은 억압과 수탈의 대상일 뿐 삶의 희망은 어디에서도 발견하기 어려운 상황이었다. 이러한 불행한 역사적 상황이 도래하기 이전인 1884년, 하나님께서는 이 땅에 구원의 복음을 전파할 외국 선교사들을 보내주셨다. 그들은 학교와 병원, 교회를 세워 복음을 전파하여 구원의 도리를 가르쳤다. 그들은 복음을 가르쳤을 뿐만 아니라 삶의 실천으로 복음의 진리를 증언하였다. 이러한 외국 선교사들의 가르침과 삶은 초기 한국교회와 그리스도인들의 신앙을 구형(構形)하여 오늘에까지 이르고 있다. 그러나 한국선교 150년이 지난 오늘날 사회적 존경과 신뢰가 급격히 추락한 한국교회의 존재와 신앙의 기상도는 밝은 것만은 아니다. 이런 맥락에서 연구자는 ‘제암리교회 학살사건’을 성찰하면서, 21세기 한국교회의 현재와 미래를 위한 과제를 세 가지, 곧 순교자의 영성 회복, 공적 신앙을 회복하는 교회, 민족의 아픔과 고난에 동참하는 교회 등을 제안하였다.
Abstract
In Korean modern history, the massacre of the Chai-am-ni Church that occurred on April 15, 1919 is the most tragic event in the history of independence movement of Koreans who protested against the Japanese imperialist occupation. The massacre of the Chai-am-ni Church can be understood in the context of the invasion of Chosen in the era of the imperialist powers based on the modernization of the 19th century in the world history. The people of Chosen, who lost their sovereignty by Japanese imperialism, were subject to oppression and detainment, and the hope of life was difficult to find anywhere. In 1884, before this unfortunate historical situation, God sent foreign missionaries to spread the gospel of salvation to Chosen. They set up schools, hospitals, and churches to preach the gospel and teach the doctrine of salvation. They not only taught the gospel, but also testified to the truth of the gospel through the practice of life. The teachings and lives of these foreign missionaries have reached the present day by constructing Christian faith of the early Christians and Korean church. But today, 150 years after Korea missions from foreign missionaries, the presence of the Korean church and their values of faith, where social respect and trust have fallen sharply, are declined. In this context, the researcher reflected on the massacre of Chai-am-ni Church and proposed three tasks for the present and future for the Korean church in the 21st century: restoration of the spirituality of martyrs, restoration of public faith, and church sharing with the pain and suffering of people.
