초록

Objectives: Suicide is one of the important causes of death. We suppose that celebrity suicide could affect the that of population. The main object of this article is to document the effects of the media coverage following the suicide of a well-known actress and politician. Methods: From october 2007 to september 2009, we analysed suicide rate, onset time, severity of suicide attempters or intentional self-harm patients (total 1,059 persons) visited four EDs in Busan after famous person’s death (A and B). Results: After A’s suicide, suicide rate has been increased (1.35% vs 2.02%, p=0.00), after B’s death, suicide rate also has been increased (1.35 vs 1.92, p=0.00). After B’s case, proportion of admitting patients has been increased (42.2% vs 48.3%) and number of patients admitting ICU has been increased (13.2% vs 24.6%, p=0.03). Conclusions: Media should care about this results when they report suicide of famous person and we should plan for appropriate treatment and go on with study and education for suicide prevention.
