Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the causal relationships among R&D capabilities, two types of internal integration, and external integration between buying firms and suppliers targeting parts suppliers in automotive, electronics, and machinery industries. With structural equation modeling (SEM), we test several hypotheses. As a result, R&D capabilities of suppliers have positive influences on not only their own internal integration but also external integration in supply chain. Contrary to R&D-marketing integration, R&D-manufacturing integration doesn't have a statistically significant impact on external integration. In terms of theoretical implications, the unit of analysis of this study is not a firm-level but a project-level. In addition, targeting suppliers, we considered both internal integration and external integration simultaneously. Finally, this research can empirically underpin the theories related to supply chain integration and relational view. In the perspective of practices, manufacturing firms should bear in mind that their R&D capabilities and R&D-marketing internal integration are important factors that affect external integration with buyers.
