Abstract
In this paper, I claim that what Heidegger intends to say with Angst(anxiety) through his works based on disclosedness of trans-modern authentic self of existing human Dasein that has to transit from the They-self that is falling in the average everydayness to authentic Selfhood. I examine this angst is not psychological angst but ontological angst in terms of functions and roles of angst. I argue that both authentic angst and primordial angst are the same in terms of unconcealment of human Dasein’s selfhood without distinguishing authentic angst, which discloses transition from inauthentic the they-self to authentic selfhood and primordial angst, which discloses ground of science and human Dasein’s selfhood that is reflecting that of science. Angst individualizes the they-self who is falling in publicity and discloses potentiality-of-Being or ecstatic possibility-to-be of authentic selfhood of Dasein. That is to say, Angst reveals Being toward ownmost potentiality-of-Being for human Dasein who pursues the Being-at-home(das Zuhause) with human Dasein falling in everyday life. They-self wants to desire stable, comfortable and average everydayness. Angst is unheimlichkeit(the not-Being-at home) or uncomfortability to beings in the world. For this reason, They-self try to avoid this state of angst. Angst effects a break with the busy work and activity of everyday existence in which it is absorbed. This is why we should have a courage of angst. Angst like the not-Being-at home, the state of being uncanny is cannot be defined by object( wobor, in the face of something) and reason(worum, about something) of it-in other words it is Nothing(Nichts) because it suddenly appeared without reasons and object of it. That is, Angst is impossibility of determinateness of it. They-self lives without being authentic selfhood because she or he lives in such a way that no one is himself, everyone is the other. Thus, They-self has always been the They who lives in the average everydayness and yet They-self is has been no one. For this reason They-self needs transition from They-self to authentic selfhood. But this authentic self is distinguished from modern subjective self. The transition to authentic self seems to be return to modern subjectivity, but this authentic self is not isolated ego, rational animal, subjective self, representational self, and self who is thinking, but rather undefined, unfixed solus ipse or ecstatic self who continues to fulfill potentiality-to-be. That is, this self does not mean representational self that represents objects as a whole and solipsism that reduces everything to self. In this sense, authentic self is trans(post)-self. According to Heidegger we criticizes modern self, who becomes self gathered together(Ge-stell) and gathers together unlimitedly through standing over and against as object(Ver-gegen-ständlichung) which masters. Human beings are anxious therefore they exist. Angst like being uncanny disturbs everyday life and discloses authentic self of human Dasein. Angst is affirmation.
