Abstract

This paper aims to explain the meaning of recapitulatio(recapitulation) in Irenaeus’ theology and dispel recently misunderstandings about it. Recapitulatio is a term for the entire ministry of Christ, beginning with the Incarnation, continuing through the Ascension, and consummating with the Second Coming. Nevertheless, some scholars have argued that Mary is a co-recapitulator with Christ, as if Christ’s ministry were insufficient and incomplete and therefore in need of supplementation and completion by Mary. This misinterpretation stems from an misunderstanding of the fact that Irenaeus uses the meaning of recapitulatio differently depending on the context. To dispel these misunderstandings, we propose a distinction between the meaning of recapitulatio as follows: First, recapitulatio of Satan, the Antichrist and Gnosticism. Satan and the Antichrist cannot unify all creatures, nor can they even make better the evil things. They merely gather evil forces to oppose Christ, only to be defeated and annihilated. Therefore, the recapitulatio of Satan and the Antichrist is merely a gathering of the evil. Second, recapitulatio of Mary. Unlike Christ or the Holy Spirit, Mary cannot restore all creatures including humanity, nor regenerate or sanctify them into new creations. However, through her faith and obedience, Mary reverses and corrects Eve’s unbelief and disobedience, becoming Eve’s mediator (advocata). She becomes an example of righteous faith and obedience, bearing witness for the saints to the path that leads to salvation and life. Third, recapitulatio of Christ. For Irenaeus, Christ’s recapitulatio not only means Christ’s restoration and renewal of humanity by correcting the mistakes of Adam and his descendants, but also encompasses the Lord’s teaching and sanctification of the church community through the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to grow and progress toward becoming like Christ and reborn in the image and likeness of God. Furthermore, on the one hand Christ’s recapitulatio is a past event that began with His First Coming, on the other hand it is a future event that will be completed with His Second Coming. Upon His return on the last day, the Lord will gather all things together and unite them, becoming the head of all things.
