순천 송광사 사천왕상의 방위문제와 조성시기

전라남도 순천시 송광사 천왕문에는 높이가 4m에 달하는 塑造사천왕상이 있다. 2004년의 복장조사를 통해 각종 전적류, 인본다라니 등이 발견되었지만, 기대했던 복장발원문은 발견되지 않았다. 하지만 복장을 봉하는데 사용하였던 封緘木 위에 각 사천왕의 정확한 방위를 알려주는 명문 묵서명이 있음이 밝혀졌다. 그 결과 비파를 든 천왕이 북방 다문천이며, 幢이나 탑을 든 천왕이 서방 광목천왕임을 알 수 있으며, 조선시대 사천왕상의 정확한 명칭을 분명하게 알려주는 중요한 자료이다. 이 글은 송광사 사천왕상의 본격적인 복장조사를 계기로 좀 더 분명해진 사천왕상의 방위문제와 대략의 조성 시기는 언제인가 밝혀보는 것이 그 목적이다. 실제로 사천왕상의 방위문제에 있어서는 그동안 논란이 없지 않았다. 이 글을 통해 지금까지 사찰마다 다르게 적고 있는 사천왕상 명칭의 혼란 문제를 잘 정리할 수 있었으면 하는 바람이 있다. 반면 조성 시기는 방위문제에 비해 분명하지 않다. 불행하게도 복장조사를 통해 기대했던 복장발원문은 발견되지 않았다. 이로써 정확한 조성시기의 단정은 어렵게 되었다. 하지만 북방 천왕이 들고 있는 비파 뒤쪽의 명문, 각종 복장 유물의 분석, 그리고 송광사 인근지역 사천왕상과 양식비교를 통해 1628년이 대략의 조성시기임을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
Four-feet high four-guardian clay statues stand in the gate of Songgwang Temple. Through the investigation done in 2004, various Buddhist scriptures were found in the chest of four-guardian clay statues. Though the records of building which we have expected were not come out, the letters indicating the accurate direction of the four-guardian statues were found on the wooden stopple. In result, we can know that the guardian statue holding mandolin is north guardian, and the guardian statue holding banner or stupa is western guardian. Besides, these records give us good sources for the accurate names of four-guardian statue in Chosun dynasty.This paper would solve the problems about the direction and the building period of the four-guardian statues. Though there still remain a lot of controversy about these problems for which the way of writing in each temple varies, I could make the accurate direction of the four-guardian statues clear with the above materials. By the way, I made the comparisons between the styles of Songgwang Temple and its neighboring temples, and I could conclude that the period of building was 1628 A.D.
