Abstract

This study examines the effects of incentive systems on inventory leanness in manufacturing firms. Only a few studies have addressed human factors as determinants of operational performance. To address this research gap, we focus on incentive systems to discuss whether performance-based compensation plans affect inventory performance by motivating employees to improve the manufacturing process. Using the Human Capital Corporate Panel data from the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training, our analysis shows the following results. First, incentive systems significantly increase inventory leanness. That is, incentive systems are likely to positively influence lean operations, as they might motivate employees by alleviating agency problems. Second, after incorporating market competition as a moderator, we find that the relationship between incentive systems and inventory leanness is strengthened under a highly competitive market, suggesting that the incentive systems act as an effective mechanism in competitive industries. These results imply that human resource management strategies are important factors that determine inventory performance. We contribute to the literature by providing evidence on the importance of human factors in achieving lean inventory in manufacturing firms.
