근현대 학술체계의 수용과 전통 학문구조의 재정립 -중국미학의 경우를 중심으로-

본 논문은 중국의 지식인들이 근현대 학술체계를 수용하고 중국 전통 학문구조를 재정립해나가는 과정을 중국미학의 경우를 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 동아시아 전통 학문과 근현대 학문 사이에 존재하는 간격을 좁히고 서로 간의 모순을 극복해나갈 수 있는 방향성을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 현재 중국을 비롯한 아시아에서 대학기관을 중심으로 하는 지식체계의 구조는 기본적으로 서양의 근대화 과정 중 신학원에서 파생되어 나온 학문의 구조를 따르고 있다. 한편 동아시아권 국가들의 경우 유구한 세월을 거쳐 그들의 지식체계를 정립시켜왔음에도 불구하고 근현대 학술구조와의 격차 때문에 그것이 하나의 지식으로 성립될 수 있다는 신빙성마저 의심받고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 동아시아 전통학문의 근현대화에 있어서의 가능성과 난점을 진단해내기 위해 중국의 경우를 중심으로 전근대 시기 사부지학(四部之學)에서 팔과지학(八科之學), 민국총서(民國叢書)로 이어지는 지식체계의 변화를 먼저 살펴본다. 이와 더불어 전통 지식구조의 근현대화에 성공했다고 평가되는 중국에서의 미학의 수용과 발전 과정을 집중적으로 살펴봄으로써 그 발전특징과 성공 원인을 분석해낸다. 극적인 성공을 거둘 수 있었던 중국 미학의 역동적 발전은 동아시아 국가들이 전통학문의 근현대화라는 난관을 극복해나가는 데 있어 하나의 실질적인 범례가 되어줄 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to narrow the gap between traditional and modern studies in East Asia and at the same time to present a way to overcome the contradictions between them by examining the process how Chinese intellectuals have accepted modern and contemporary academic systems and re-established a Chinese academic structure. The structure of the knowledge system in East Asia basically follows the academic structure derived from the seminary during the Western modernization process. Oh the other hand, even though East Asian countries have established their own knowledge system in their rich history, there are doubts whether it can be an academic system nowadays due to the gap between modern and contemporary academic structure. Thus, to check the possibilities and difficulties that this modernization process has, this paper will preferentially examine the changes in the knowledge system from Complete Library of Four Branches of Books（四庫全書） to Eight branches of Learning (八科之學) and Series of books in Republic of China (民國叢書). At the same time, this paper analyzes the development characteristics and the cause of success by focusing on the acceptance and development process of aesthetics in China, which is considered successful in modernizing its traditional knowledge structure. The dynamic development of Chinese aesthetics which had a dramatic success, could serve as a practical precedent for East Asian countries to overcome the difficulty of modernizing traditional studies.
