Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the cause of teacher’s instruction and student’s learning difficulties in sound energy lessons of elementary school science according to the curriculum and textbooks (C&T). The study compared and analyzed Korean C&T to those of United States, Japan, and Singapore. C&T have stronger effects on the causes of teaching and learning difficulties than student, teacher, or environment. The study revealed that the level of difficulty of textbook is too advanced for students’ grade level including excessive learning requirements and experiment activities. Using the TIMSS evaluation frame to check out learning contents on sound, we found that TIMSS placed the generation and propagation of sound in the 4th grade and placed sound pitch and volume in the 8th grade. On the other hand Korean C&T deals with sound pitch and volume in the 3rd grade which leads to serious difficulty in teaching and learning. The study lastly found that the Japanese curriculum dose not deal with contents on sound while Singapore curriculum simply deals with a sound as a sort of energy. While in the textbooks of United States, they deal with the contents on sound every grade level gradually becoming harder and harder. Given the results of this study, we suggest that the difficulty and amount of learning should be adjusted and the grade level which deal with the sound should be rearranged. The experimental activities in the textbook also should be modified for the students to perform more easily.
