Abstract
Objectives: The presence of homocysteine is associated with the early onset of generalized osteoporosis. It has been hypothesized that the homocysteine is involved in osteoporosis. A foreign study suggested the possible involvement of increased plasma homocysteine levels in BMD is unknown. In this study, to examine the influence of homocysteine on osteoporosis, we studied the relationship between homocysteine levels and the BMD in korean postmenopausal women. Methods: The subjects were 200 postmenopausal women who visited a health promotion center of a university hospital in seoul from February 2004 to February 2005. We assigned the women to 3 group by lumbar 2-4 BMD and Femur neck BMD and checked the serum homocysteine levels and then analyzed by ANOVA. Results: In the normal BMD group, the homocysteine levels was 7.01±1.73mg/dL, in the osteopenic group, 7.26±1.08mg/dL, in the osteoporotic group, 6.62±1.51mg/dL, respectively. Thus it was non-significant. Conclusion: In the postmenopausal women serum homocysteine levels according to BMD is not significant in analysis.
