Abstract
This study aims to clarify the achievements and influence of government-sponsored education in the late Joseon period by analyzing the records of academic excellence and the career trajectories of government students (gwanhak yusaeng). Using memorial petitions from the reigns of King Yeongjo to King Cheoljong, a total of 4,486 students were identified, including 1,173 saengwon and jinsa, and 3,313 yuhak. The study comprehensively examines the relationships among the sahak gwasi, the Seonggyungwan gwasi, and the outcomes of the sogwa and mungwa . The analysis reveals that 13.7% of yuhak achieved honors in the sahak gwasi, with 44.2% of them receiving multiple honors. The sogwa pass rate among sahak honors students was 47.0%, approximately four times higher than that of non-honors students (11.8%). In addition, 22.0% of all government students achieved honors in the Seonggyungwan gwasi, and 7.3% succeeded in passing the mungwa. The mungwa success rate of Seonggyungwan honors students (22.4%) was about seven times higher than that of non-honors students (3.0%). These findings demonstrate that the gwasi examination systems of both sahak and Seonggyungwan played a crucial role in the operation of the state examination system during the late Joseon period. Furthermore, the observed rates of honors and examination success among government students may serve as empirical indicators for future studies exploring the relationship between Confucian education and the civil service examination system in Joseon.
