Abstract
In the Middle Age of Iberian Peninsular, it is indisputable that the periods of Spanish coexistence depict moments in history in which people lived under restrictive governing bodies. In the case of coexistence, subjects were limited to their own religious communities as a basis for identity, which enabled them, through their secure roots in these groups, to exchange ideas with other cultures. Regardless of the intentions of the rulers, whether they pursued a multicultural society or the complete opposite, subjects of these periods nonetheless demonstrated an ability to create and adapt. In this article, I try to analyze spanish baroque mentality, through the decentralization of monolithic identity such as sexuality or religion. On the basis of personal experience of the captive life of Cervantes in Algiers, prisoner of the Turkish Corsairs after their participation in the battle of Lepanto, we take account of a tremendous endeavor of author in order to cure his trauma from captivity. Cervantes seeks to find an answer in a relative point of view from which he intents to revaluate a medieval multicultural ideology (coexistence) beyond religious identity. Through sultan's love and tolerance towards Christian woman slave and other captives, Cervantes insinuates that the baroque mentality, caused by cultural impact between ignorant illusion and revelation of starkest truth, may be overcome by decentralizing the attempts to preserve the solitary identity, and by interacting with each other.
