이 논문에서는 원작소설, 번역본, 시나리오를 비교해가면서 <순교자>의 각색의 의미를 1960년대의 시대적 상황 및 문화적 맥락 안에서 고찰했다. 먼저 원작소설이 영화를 비롯한 다른 예술장르로 각색된 경위와 과정을 관련 자료를 참조하여 살펴보았고, 영화의 각색이 어떤 의도를 지녔는가를 시나리오와 필름 분석을 통해 구체적으로 논했다. 그 결과 <순교자>의 제작과 수출에는 한국과 미국의 문화교류라는 맥락 속에서 다양한 인물들이 갖가지 형태로 관여하고 서로 영향을 끼쳤다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 이렇게 문예영화 <순교자>가 원작을 어떻게 번역·각색했으며 그것이 어떤 시대적, 문화적 문맥에서 생산․수용되었는가를 고찰하는 작업은 궁극적으로 역사적인 장르로서 1960년대 한국 문예영화의 지향점을 찾는 일이 될 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper, "Munye-yeonghwa"(literary film), The Martyred is examined through comparing its original novel version in English, Korean translation, and scenario in the 1960's situation and socio-cultural context. Firstly, I survey the details and process of adaptational works among the original, Korean translation, the scenario, and the film. Secondly, I discuss what the adaptations intended to do, analysing the film and the scenario specifically. Lastly, it comes to light that making and exporting the Martyred abroad involved diverse people of Korea and America in the context of Korean-American cultural exchange. As a result, examining not only how the Martyred was translated and adapted to the film, but in what periodical and cultural context, the film was produced and appreciated, would be ultimately the work which is researching the orientation of Munye-yeonghwa as historical film genre in 1960s.
