Abstract

Contemporary postcolonial and cultural studies today are under suspicion of undermining the point of Frantz Fanon's thought. And there are still the inhuman situations of beings that are marginalized in other new suppressed systems after the end of colonial rule which Fanon fought to the death to overcome. These demonstrate convincingly that Fanon's calling on both white and colored people to transform themselves into new man still have significance for us. In this respect, this paper summons and reexamines his remarks on ‘new humanism.’For Fanon, European humanism can't help to free the colored people of the non-being domains. Instead, it supported and exacerbated the racial views that regarded the colored people as non-humans, sub-humans and things. In order to criticize the false views and practices on human beings in European humanism, to develop new humans, and to create new spaces for them, Fanon suggests that both white and colored people achieve their self-liberation and respect each other, following an ethics of reciprocal recognition. Furthermore, Fanon makes a proposal for developing the views on national consciousness and nationalism based on his new humanism. This new humanism in Fanon's thought not only makes a large contribution toward solving human problems in colonial and neocolonial rule, but also inspires us to ponder upon what we must do to cope with the resulting tragedies and horrors in racial, national, cultural and religious conflicts at the present day.
