Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the validity of the Josephus record by comparing the first half and the second half of the siege of Jerusalem. Josephus said that Titus immediately helped save the Romans from danger, but it was Titus himself who caused the situation. Titus was often deceived by the tactics of disguising the surrender of the Jews, believing that if he treated the Jews kindly, the Jews would not harbor any hostility. Therefore, from a tactical point of view, the leadership of the early battles of the siege was with the Jewish army. Late in the siege, Jewish forces still hampered Roman construction and attempted to attack the siege route. However, in preparation for this, the Roman army with powerful weapons was placed around the siege road, so that the mistake of not carrying weapons and only construction was no longer made. Siege warfare using siege equipment was also attempted. In addition, in response to the arson of the siege equipment of the Jewish army, a countermeasure was taken to guard against the deployment of weapons and troops. The guard post was used as a base of defense as well as a base of attack. At the same time as the attack, Titus tried to weaken the Jewish army by inducing famine and desertion. The Roman victory in the second half of the siege should be viewed as a tactical strengthening of Titus rather than a weakening of the Jewish army. As Titus improved his tactical skills, the early leadership of the Jewish army was transferred to Rome. Therefore, there was a change in the subject taking the initiative in the process of the siege.
