초록
현시대는 이미지와 볼거리가 넘쳐나는 시대이다. 본 논문은 현시대를 사는 우리가 이미지를 소비하면서 이미지와 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 전통적으로 이미지와 주체의 관계는 긍정적인 측면보다는 부정적인 측면이 더 우세했다. 고대의 회화를 비판한 플라톤부터 현대의 스펙터클 사회를 비판하는 드보르까지 이미지는 주체를 속이고 이미지 생산권력의 이익을 대변하는 이데올로기적 역할을 한다고 비판받았다. 그러나 이미지와 주체의 관계에 대한 부정적인 평가는 지금 우리가 살아가고 있는 현시대의 주체의 경험을 충분히 설명하지 못하며, 이는 이미지와 주체의 관계에 대한 대안적인 이론이 필요하다는 인식을 유도한다. 본 논문은 이미지 상품을 소비하는 주체와 이미지의 관계에 대한 세 가지 상반된 입장들을 푸코, 라캉, 랑시에르의 이론을 통해 살펴봄으로써 현재 이미지에 대한 우리의 태도를 가늠해보고자 한다.
Abstract
It has been argued that the subject is overwhelmed by a host of images since the invention of cinema and that the relationship between image and subjectivity is negative rather than positive because the subject as a spectator does not have control of image when watching images in motion on screen. Since Plato, image has been considered fictional and imaginary, not real and authentic. The property attributed to the image has been imaginary, illusory, ostensible, even false and deceitful. Meanwhile, in the contemporary society of visual media where we are surrounded by a large number of images, the understanding of the image as fictional and false does not help us appreciate the effects of images on our lives. This paper aims at exploring an alternative theory on the relationship of image and subjectivity via various theories of postmodern thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, and Jacques Rancière.
