Abstract
The sexual image of Moorish women in medieval Spain can be seen as having its origins insexual exploitations committed historically in the colonial power relationship within Christiansociety. The image of Moorish women as objects of sexual desire are also the result of projectingsexual fantasy onto these women from the perspective of Christian men. The frontier ballads are discourses of Spanish Christian society that faithfully reflect the situationsof the border region. Moorish cities that are not incorporated into the Christian kingdomare feminized and sexualized in the frontier ballads. The Moorish cites projected into theChristian society are the contact point where faith, power, and sexuality meet. Sexual desirefor erotic Moorish cities serves as a mechanism by which Christian power can expand. Sexuality and war are strategic components of power and conquest. The sexual image ofMoorish women is historical in that it weakens as the reconquest ends.
