Abstract
Unlike Joseon, when Classical Chinese and vernacular Korean(eonmun) coexisted in a diglossic structure, the linguistic situation in the modern era developed in a much more complex manner. With the recognition that an independent linguistic system is a fundamental prerequisite for the establishment of a modern nation-state, Joseon faced an unprecedented linguistic change. Whereas vernacular Korean (eonmun), which had previously been relegated to a supplementary role to Classical Chinese, now assumed a position as a civilized language with a newly assigned mission. Furthermore, in the context of the modern linguistic ideal of eonmun ilchi (the unity of spoken and written language), vernacular Korean (eonmun) came to be recognized as the only means capable of fully representing spoken language. Thus, the formation of the modern written sentence, which embodied eonmun ilchi, would have been unimaginable without vernacular Korean(eonmun) However, it is not easy to analyze how spoken language, which disappears the moment it is uttered, is connected to written language and, further, how this connection contributes to the formation of new written sentences based on eonmun ilchi. In this regard, the modern methods of speech, such as speeches, debates, and dialogues, which gained popularity at the time, serve as important data for understanding the formation of eonmun ilchi. Although speeches, debates, and dialogues exist in written form today, their various characteristics clearly distinguish them from earlier writing styles, and they possess key qualities that are crucial to eonmun ilchi. This study examines how these various forms of speech, conducted in vernacular Korean (eonmun), contributed to eonmun ilchi by analyzing several of their key features.
