Abstract

This study aims to examine the BUMA(Busan-Masan) Democratic Uprising and Germany's 1968 Revolution from a comparative historical perspective, exploring the possibility of reflecting on the uprising's distinctiveness and its significance in world history. Existing studies on its the BUMA Uprising have focused on its domestic context, with comparisons to foreign movements or revolutions largely unexplored. Accordingly, this paper analyzes the commonalities and differences between BUMA and ‘68, focusing on three aspects: state violence, struggles against unjust laws, and the spread from student demonstrations to citizen resistance. Germany’s ‘68 represents a case where student movements expanded into mass resistance amid opposition to the Nazi legacy and Emergency Laws. The BUMA Uprising was a struggle where students and citizens united against the repressive structure of the Yushin Constitution and the authoritarian dictatorship. Both events share similarities: state violence became the spark for mass anger and protests, and student movements ignited into massive civic resistance. However, BUMA possesses a distinctive specificity in that it confronted a military dictatorship backed by the United States within the Cold War structure. This study attempts to reposition the Korean democratization movement within the global history of resistance by drawing parallels between the BUMA Democratic Uprising and the German ‘68 Revolution. Furthermore, it holds significance in providing a starting point for reflecting on and gauging the international implications of the BUMA uprising.
