영어권 중국사 개설서에 보이는 한국 관련 지도의 실태 분석

본 연구는 지금까지 영어로 출판된 중국사 개설서에 포함되어 있는 각종 지도들 가운데 한국왕조나 한반도가 포함된 지도들을 총괄적으로 살피되, 그 실태 조사를 통해 어떤 경향성이 있는지 파악하고 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 사실을 알게 되었다. 도합 166종의 도서를 조사했고, 그 가운데 한국 관련 내용을 포함한 지도의 개체 수는 도합 568점이었다. 이 가운데 문제가 되는 지도의 개체 수는 161점으로, 이는 대략 전체의 28%에 달하는 수치이다. 평균적으로 말해, 대개 4개 가운데 하나에서 문제를 보이는 셈이다. 이 131개의 오류지도를 좀 더 자세히 보면, 경계(영토) 표시 관련 오류를 보이는 지도가 101점(63%), 한국왕조 이름의 로마자 표기를 중국어 발음으로 한 오류지도가 44점(27%), 지도의 내용이 엉성하고 모호하여 심각한 오해를 야기할 지도가 25점(16%)의 비율로 나타났다. (한 지도에 두 종류 이상의 문제를 보이는 지도도 있으므로, 백분율의 합은 100을 넘을 수 있음). 또한 시기별로 보면, 고조선이나 한사군 등 고대로 올라갈수록 문제지도의 개체 수가 많고, 후대로 내려올수록 개체 수가 적은 현상을 알 수 있었다. 출판 시기별로 보아도, 이전으로 올라갈수록 문제지도의 비율이 상대적으로 높으며, 현재에 가깝게 내려올수록 문제지도의 비율이 낮아지는 현상을 읽을 수 있었다. 따라서 현재로서는 이것이 ‘동북공정’과 어떤 관련이 있다고는 생각되지 않지만, 앞으로도 예의주시할 필요가 있어 보인다.
Abstract
This article looks at Korea-related maps included in the English survey books of Chinese history published since the nineteenth century. From 166 books examined, 568 maps included either Korean states or the Korean peninsula. Out of those 568 maps, 161 maps, about 28%, show something arguable, if not incorrect, regarding Korea. They can thus be placed under the category of ‘problematic maps.’ Looking at those 161 problematic maps more closely, 101 maps (63%) have problems with respect to the borders between Korean and Chinese states. Forty-four maps (27%) demonstrate problems in romanizing Korean state and city names, not with Korean pronunciations but Chinese or Japanese. Also, the maps depicting states in earlier times tend to produce relatively more problematic maps than those of the modern times. In terms of the publication years, problematic maps tend to be found more easily from books published before the 1960s-70s; the United States and China were normalized in 1972. Yet the rate is still approximately 25% or above. This article analyzes some possible reasons for such errors, including the different interpretations of Sino-Korean relations based on the tribute system and ignorance and indifference of western scholars of Chinese history in Korean history, to name a few.
