Abstract
The article deals with the Sino-Sogdians’ identity, which emerged through studies on Sino-Sogdian art in the late 6th century. A fullfledged study of the Sogdians, who left Sogdiana and settled in mainland China after the 2nd century, was triggered by the four Sogdian tombs’ excavations in the late 6th century around 2000. They built underground tombs with bricks and laid a tomb epitaph and a funerary monument, such as a sarcophagus or a stone couch. In Sogdiana, the funeral’s core was to prevent the body from contaminating the world where it lives. Three rounds of sagdid and exposure in dakhma during the funeral period were performed for this purpose. The flesh-removed bones are placed in an ossuary and placed in a ground-based family tomb called Naus. In previous scholarship, the Chinese way of tombs of the Sogdians in the late 6th century, which was excavated in China, was taken as evidence of the tendency toward sinicization, or Hanhua. In this article, I reconsidered the Sogdians’ tomb and funeral furniture, judging that the view of the Sogdians is more important than the view of the Chinese to consider the issue of Sogdian identity. First of all, if the tombs of Sino-Sogdians in the late 6th century were the result of sinicization, Hanhua should have been preceded in thoughts of death and funeral. However, the tombs were a way to maintain and protect their own perspective. Brick tombs and stone couches can prevent contamination of the ground by preventing the body from coming into contact with the ground. On top of this, in the Sogdian tomb, the body was placed in the east-west direction, not in the north-south direction, the traditional Chinese style. In other words, as migrants, they held funeral ceremonies in a way that did not go against their own customs while avoiding the rituals that caused conflicts with Chinese people. Thus, it was judged that the tomb of the Sogdians at the time was not a result of being “assimilated” or “sinicized” to Chinese culture, but rather a “choice” to “adapt” to the unfamiliar environment
