營州의 大祚榮 集團과 渤海國의 性格까운 나이였음에도 불구하고‘驍勇善用兵’또는‘驍勇善戰’하였다고 하는 점이다. 만약 그가 일반 편호의 생활을 하였다면, 과연 그러한 면모를 보일 수있었을까. 대조영과 그의 집단이 일반민으로 편호되었다면, 조금씩 중국사회에 동화되어 새로운 나라를 건국하는 것은 엄두도 내지 못하였을 것이다.대조영 집단이 성방으로 편제되었던 것은 당조가 정책적으로 그들을 이용하기 위함이었다. 성방의 대부분은 유목민이었는데, 당조는 그들의 군사력을이용하기 위해 원래의 부락조직과 야성을 그대로 유지시켰다. 대조영 등은 유목민이 아니었지만, 당조는 고구려인의 강력한 군사능력과 상무정신을 잘 알고 있었다. 이에 당조는 그러한 고구려인을 자신의 군사력으로 다시 활용하기위해 성방으로 편제하고 원래의 습속을 유지시켰던 것이라 하겠다. 그러면서대조영 집단도 원래의 민족적 정체성을 계속 유지할 수 있었다.발해는 건국 이후 영역확장을 계속하였다. 여기에는 여러 가지 대내외적요인들이 함께 작용하였겠지만, 대조영이 영주의 성방이었던 것이 크게 작용을 하였을 것이다. 발해는 태생적으로 팽창적인 무력국가의 속성을 가졌던 것이라 하겠다. 이러한 속성은 2대 무왕 대무예와 3대 문왕 대흠무에게도 계승되어 발해는 요동의 대부분을 차지하고 동으로 송화강 하류에까지 세력을 미치게 되었다. 특히 무왕 대에는 흑수말갈 문제로 당과 갈등이 생기자 732년에 장문휴를보내 바다로 당의 본토인 산동지역의 등주와 산해관 근처의 마도산을 공격하게 한 것은 발해의 공격적 속성을 잘 보여주는 것이다. 그리고 발해의 이러한속성은 10대 선왕 대인수 시대에 다시 한번 발산되어 일시 위축되었던 영토를더욱 확장시켰다. 그 결과 발해는 사방 5,000여 리의 강역을 차지하여 전성기를 누리면서 발해성국이라는 명성을 얻게 되었던 것이다.
Abstract
Tae Jo-young(大祚榮)’ s Group at the Ying-chou(營州) Period and Balhae(渤海) Nation’ s Character Cheong, Byung-Jun Before and After the decline of Koguryo, its many people wereforced into the Tang’ s territories. Some became ordinary subjectsunder the rule of the Empire, other belonged the military soldi ersin the areas of the frontiers.Generally, Tang had put all the surrendered people into thefrontier areas and so they became the Empire’ s soldiers. Thesepeople were called the Cheng-bang (城傍). And They were muchdifferent from Chi-mi fu-chou (羈 府州), another colonizedcontrol administration system. Above all, Cheng-bang wasconsisted on the basis of tribes. Also it could have been learn edand provided regularly the military skills and techniques by th eEmpire. It had original identity, and so did Koguryo’ s Cheng-bang. After Koguryo’ s fall, Tae Jo-young and his followers hadbeen exiled to Yong-chou(營州) located in the northern-easterndistrict of Tang. And they were organized as a unity of Cheng-bang. After this move, they engaged in military activities. Thesespecial military experiences helped Tae Jo-young build a newdynasty as Balhae(渤海國). Also, the military skills and abilitieshad succeeded into his descendants. Therefore, Balhae could be able to keep and sustain the peculiar military state. I think that Balhae's territorial expansion over their neighboring areas could be explained through three very unique historcal experiences.
