Abstract
[Abstract] Portrayals on Korea - Japan Relations in the Text Books of National History in Korea and Japan. Choi, Young-ho (Youngsan Univ.) This paper deals with the problems portrayed on the postwar relations between Korea and Japan in the text books about national history for middle school and high school in today's Korea and Japan. Three books widely used in each countries were selected and investigated for this work. The important issues in the diplomatic relations between two nations are in writer's opinion as follows : (1) Chosun Governmental General's operations after the war, (2) Japanese repatriates from Korean peninsula, (3) Korean repatriates from Japan, (4) Japan's engagement in Korean war, (5) Korean problems in San Francisco Peace Treaty for Japan, (6) Negotiations for normalization of two nation's diplomatic relation, (7) Rhee Syngman's Peace Line, (8) Postwar problems and diplomatic dispute on the historical perception, (9) People's interaction across two countries. In conclusion, two problems in common are found in the books as weak points in the field of history education of Korea and Japan. First, the text books lack contents about postwar relation of Korea and Japan on the whole, regardless many or few descriptions on the international affairs within them. Second, there is little consideration on the marginal people, the social minorities and people's migration in the books, while focused mainly on own nationals, politicians, and social majorities.
