여성 지적장애인의 결혼과정과 결혼생활의 의미에 관한 질적 사례연구

초록

본 연구는 여성 지적장애인 당사자가 결혼과정에서 겪는 다양한 어려움들이 무엇이고, 결혼은 어떠한 과정을 통해 진행되었으며, 그들에게 결혼이 주는 의미는 무엇인가를 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 결혼경험이 있는 4명의 여성 지적장애인 연구 참여자들을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 실시하였다. 인터뷰한 내용을 전사하였고 결혼과 관련해 가장 빈번하게 나타났던 자기결정권, 정상화 등의 의미를 지닌 내용에 대하여 지속적 비교 분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 총 74개의 의미단위와 13개의 소주제, 그리고 4개의 중심주제가 나타났다. 구체적으로 여성 지적장애인 당사자가 경험한 결혼과정과 결혼경험에 대한 4개의 중심주제는「결혼, 그 모호한 시작」,「낯설고 서툰 결혼생활」,「갑자기 얻게 된 엄마라는 이름」,「결혼, 나를 진짜 어른으로 만들다」으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 여성 지적장애인의 결혼과정 및 이후 결혼생활에서 경험하는 다양한 어려움과 양육, 당사자의 성장과정을 확인하였고, 결혼한 여성 지적장애인에 대한 개별적 교육, 지역사회의 지지체계 지원, 생애주기적 개입과 정상화(normalization) 극대화의 필요성에 대해 제언하였다.

Abstract

This study aimed to understand the meaning of marriage process and married-life experiences of women with intellectual disabilities who lived in a community. Using a qualitative case study method, data was collected and analyzed; participants were selected from the recommendations of a social worker working at a public agency, and interviewed 4 women with intellectual disabilities using individual in-depth interviewing methods. Finally, we could find 74 concepts and 13 categories and 4 major themes. The main themes were extracted from the married-life experiences of women with intellectual disabilities. Such themes were “Marriage, an ambiguous start,” “Unfamiliar and clumsy marriage-life,” “Suddenly gained name, mother,” “Be a real adult through marriage experience.” The participants often expressed difficulties in child-rearing, financial management, communication with support group and independent living. Based on the findings, the researchers proposed implications for policy and practice to improve the quality of life for women with intellectual disabilities: (1) individuals with disabilities need to be provided with information and education relevant to marriage, (2) they need to be given opportunities to join or to be advocated by support group, (3) counselling and training program for being good parents based on child’s life-course, (4) maximizing their normalization.
