Abstract

This study conducted in-depth interviews with peer respites’ users and workers using general qualitative research methods to explore the experiences of service use and provision of peer respites, which are operated by and for the needs of people with psychosocial disabilities in the mental health field. The results showed that, first, they perceived and experienced their crises as ‘emotional distress due to compounded isolation’; second, their experiences of receiving support during their crises prior to using peer respites could be summarized as ‘restriction of rights and social withdrawal based on external judgments’. Third, the experience of peer respites is characterized as a ‘rights-centered and connected safe zone’. Fourth, even after leaving the shelter, they are able to 'maintain their peer-solidarity'. The implications of peer respites are that, first, the crisis is not judged from the perspective of others, but is defined by the person themselves according to their own subjective perspective. Second, it provides support in a form that is tailored to the person's preferences and needs, rather than fitting them into a prescribed service or environment. Third, it allows the person to feel that they are in a horizontal relationship with the workers, and a relationship filled with a sense of safety and trust contributes greatly to the person's psychological stability. Fourth, the respite functions as a place of refuge, a place to escape from crisis and stimuli. Fifth, shelters are not places where people are disconnected from society upon entering, but rather provide opportunities to continue to connect with society and even access new communities.
