Abstract

This study aimed to understand the essential meaning of the lived experiences of adults with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) by deeply exploring their lives leading up to the experience of mental disorders from their own perspectives. Using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, we conducted in-depth interviews with eight adults with BIF and mental disorders, along with seven of their caregivers, to understand the essential meaning of their experiences. Five theme clusters and thirteen themes emerged from the analysis. The participants’ experiences began with the sense of “a child who can't keep up with the pace of the world.” Due to cognitive difficulties manifesting during development, they encountered “awkward communication and repeated failure,” internalizing a negative self-image of “I can’t do it.” Within a world that fails to fully understand them, their vulnerabilities became easy targets for aggression, exposing them to chronic violence and isolation. In their struggle for survival amid prolonged adversity, their internalized suffering eventually manifested as psychiatric symptoms. Ultimately, the accumulated inner pain manifested as a mental disorder, but paradoxically, the diagnosis of ‘mental disorder’ served as a pathway for family and society to recognize their issues and allowed access to practical support systems. This study is significant in that it provides an in-depth exploration of the lived experiences of adults with BIF who also have mental disorders.
